Microsoft has confirmed a firmware issue which has caused 30GB Zune media players to crash on the stroke of New Year's Eve.
According to an article over on Wired, the flaw seems to be a failing in the internal clock to handle the leap year we've just left. As the clock ticked over onto its 365th day the system panicked rather impressively, with the result that owners of 30GB Zunes – as few as that may be – were left with a completely unusable device.

bit-tech Mod of the Year 08 Winner No.4
We've got our fourth random winner chosen from those who voted so far, and as usual to reward this lucky person, we've some more prizes ready to be given away as well!
For today's prize we've teamed up with the wonderful people at PC Power and Cooling and In-Win to bundle two premium bits of kit: firstly a PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750W PSU that should provide plenty of power for any PC in 2009 - we previously gave this unit our recommended award as well! And for somewhere to put it - there's also an In-Win B2 Advanced Gaming Chassis that was "inspired by the Stealth Bomber".

Microsoft denies Media Player vulnerability
Microsoft has claimed this week that reports of a security vulnerability in its Windows Media Player are "false," after proof of concept code was posted to the Bugtraq security mailing list last week.
According to CNet, the software giant is hastily quelling the claims by Laurent Gaffie that Windows Media Player versions 9, 10, and 11 all contain a flaw which allows remote execution of code – which is to say, 0wnage by J. Random Cracker.
